Swiftlet farming (part 2)

Author: Pak Harry

  1. Why many BHs failed?
    1. Introduction:

    – The number of failed BHs in Malaysia is in the region of 75% – 80% or maybe much more.
    – The same percentages applise to neighboring countries.
    – Failed BHs means the value of nests harvested per month cannot cover the monthly cost to your finance company of friend who lend you the money.

2. Why so many failed?
– There is no exact answer to this question.
– We can only based on what we gather during various visits to fail BHs and interview their owners.
– Beside new BHs that are many BH with hundreds or a few thousand nests that stop multiplying after a period of time.
– The reasons for both types is nearly the same if you visit these affected BH.

3. The top of the list:
– If you look into the Industry very deeply you will find this so called “A P&C Industry” (Property and Casually).
– People who operate BH tends to keep their secret only for themselves.
– Sharing of these secrets are a kind of taboo.

4. What else to reduce BH failures?
– There are a few more important things that can help you to populate your BH.
– Choose the right location.
– Choose the right BH design.
– Use the right equipment to lure those swiftet to your BH.
– Make your BH conducive enough for them to stay.
– Choose the right internal sound.
– Choose the right external sound.
– Adopt a proper strategies to populate your BH.

5. What is the ideal location?
– When you erect your BH your main objective in to lure somebody’s birds into your house.
– These birds already have a home perhaps nests with eggs or babies.
– To pull them into your BH they need to fly closed to your BH.
– The range is more like the range where those external sound can reach. 1 kilometer the most.
– The best is to find a piece of land that is below their flying path.
– They take the same flying path everyday from their fooding area back to where they stay.
– How to know the flying path?

6. How to choose the ideal piece of land?
– If you found a piece of land for sale, don’t rush into buying it.
– Do a “birdcall test” first, play a sound call “Duress” and count the number of birds that appear above the gadget.
– “Duress” sound will only attract swiftlet and no other birds.
– They will hover above your calling gadget for a period of time until they wanted to rush to find food or go home.
– Once the number is correct you now need to proceed to the next step.
– If not test it again for at least three times at different time of the day. The best is after a heavy rainfall.

7. The birdcall gadget.

  1. Count the number of birds flying home:
    – Once you bird call test achieved the number targeted you can now do a “bird count”.
    – Main purpose is to check if the land is located below their flying path and how many do actually fly above it every evening.
    – You need to bring a counter, paper and a pen.
    – Position yourself facing where those birds are coming from.
    – Count them every minute how many there are in the open sky every minute.
    – Once finish you can actually tally the total number that flew above it.

9. The tally number: What is it for?
– The total number of swiftlet flying above your land will allow you to judge how many birds will be exposed to visit your BH.
– The large the better, most of them will some how visit your BH.
– The most important is that every breeding cycle their newly added family will be flying with them and thus expose your BH to these young birds.
– If there are 1000 birds during the count, you might have 2000 during the next cycle (4 months) and maybe 4000 after that.
– For the years to come these number will grow exponentially and your BH will be in a very good position to be populated.

10. What more to look at: water sources.
– Beside lots of birds during the call test and evening count you need to look for any water sources nearby.
– Any lakes, ponds, rivers, parit, estuaries, mining pools, prawn of fish farm.
– Water not only will provide water to quench their thirst but also do generate insects.
– Refer to my article about fooding behaviors of swiftlet.
– Every morning and evening swiftlet need to drink at least twice a day.
– During hot season they will dip their body to wet their abdomen feathers to carry water home to wet their babies.
– If there are no water sources, dig a few ponds.

11. Also survey the area for any succssful BHs.
– If you know that there are a number of successful BHs closed to the piece of land, you might hit a jackpot.
– Your tenants have to be from someone BH.
– Those successful BHs are the one where your young birds were born.
– These BHs will become your young swiftlet generator.
– If these BHs have say 10,000 nests in total, you will have at least 60,000 young birds every 12 months.
– All you need to do now is the knowledge on how to pull them into your BH.

12. Flat land is better than hilly!
– It is better the land to be a those flat land.
– Flat land have more advantages as compared to hilly areas.
– Usually birds will choose flat areas to find food the moment they fly out of their house.
– In the evening they will also visit these flat land for their final meal of the day.
– The best is a land closed to a padi field, a pool, beside a river, or beside a waste treatment ponds.
– The surrounding must be cleared from tall trees.
– The rule of the thumb is to apply the law of 50:30:20.
– 50% flat area, 30% hilly and 20% water sources.
