Swiftlet farming (part 4)

Author: Pak Harry

  1. Why is it so important to choose the right sounds for your BH:
    1. Introduction:

    – One very strange bahevior of swiftlet is that they like to sing to each other.
    – They “serenade” by singing their latest love song to their partner.
    – In other instances the leaders of each colony do make the loudest sound to stress who is the boss.
    – They also make different sounds during different time of the breeding cycle.

2. Perfect sound is a must!
– Most sick BHs have many common characteristics.
– The most common is using the wrong sounds or the same sound for ages.
– Most BH owners have no idea on how important are those sounds to their BH.
– Some cannot even differentiate between internal and external sounds.
– Between mating and colony.
– Some use those scary “Duress” sound as their external sound.

3. Swiftlet farming sounds:

      • From my knowledge, there are at least five types of birdcall sounds.

    – The Birdcall test sound (example Duress).

      – The Mating sound (example Internal Mating).
      – The Colony sound (example Internal Colony).
      – The External sound (example Black Cloud).
    – The Baby sounds (example Superbabyking).
    • Some believed in using Pooling sound.

– Sound that you used on your hexagonal and umbrella tweeters.

  1. How do these sounds recorded?
    – Very long ago in Setiawan, Perak, the sounds were tape using microphone on a long bamboo sticks.
    – The local will rent a lorry and fixed the lorry with recording equipment and they will move from on BH to another to record those sounds played and throught in by the Indonesia.
    – In Indonesia, the sounds are actually recorded live.
    – They use microphone hung in their BHs with lotss of birds inside.
    – They will use more then one microphone attached to a recorder each.
    – Once recorded the sounds will be cleaned, cut and paste and tested.

5. Birdcall test sound!!!
– There are a number of Birdcall test sounds available in the market.
– The best so far is the sound I called “DURESS”.
– This sound depict young birds calling for help.
– Some people claimed that the young birds legs were squeezed hard so that they will call for help.
– Upon hearing the cry all those birds will come to help.
– This sound is not suitable as your External or Internal sound.

6. Mating sound!!!
– Mating sound is ussually the sound made by the female & male to during their courting and nest building (my assumption).
– In breeding there is a distinct period when to build the nest, when to copulate, to lay the eggs, incubating, hatching and feeding the young until they fly away.
– In swiftlet world once the urge to have sex comes into play the male needs to build the nest.
– Once the nest is partially ready the female will be invited to test the nest. Only when she feel that the nest is strong, safely located and will be enough for her to lay those eggs will she give the green light to copulate.
– The sound generated during this mating period could be the mating sound.
– Playing of mating sound will stimulate any new couple to start their mating process.

7. Baby crying sound!!!
– Once they are hungry or thirsty those baby birds will cry for food.
– Their sound can be easily identified and is very useful in attracting young birds to stay.
– In total darkness those tweeters with baby birds sound will make your new tenant feel that your BH is full of young birds and is a safe place to stay.
– Each tweeter will act as a nest with a set of babies.
– Beside luring young birds, baby sounds is also observed to ba able to attract matured birds.
– It is more like animal instinct.
– If you have the ability to modify sounds you might want to consider to mix baby sounds with your other sounds.

8. The Colony sound!!!
– Imagine your BH is full with lots of birds during none mating season.
– They just return home from a day flying all over the land and now back home.
– Everyone wanted to talk about their happening and the sound generated is called “Colony sound”.
– I believed they must be chatting among themselves or with their babies.
– The most interesting is when many of the birds are making their new nests.
– This will be the most attractive sound to be used in your BH

9. How to use Mating & Colony sounds effectively?
– Firstly you need to know your birds breeding cycle.
– Usually they will start during December till March, April till July and August till November.
– Each breeding cycle is around 4 months.
– Play the mating sound on the early part of the breeding cycle and then change to colony sound once they start to build their nests or eggs are laid.
– Start on the mid of March till mid of April, mid of July till mid of August and mid of November till mid of December (Mating).
– Recommended only ofr those BHs with more then 100 nests only.
– Those below 100 nests play those mating sound only.

10. External sound!!!
– Good external sound is similar to your pumping heart.
– Once it is dead due to any reasons or no longer effective your BH is also dead.
– So one of the most important thing for you to do is to keep your BH alive. Play effective birdcall sounds.
– These sounds are made by various birds type.
– Ussually swiftlet loves to “serenate” their lover.
– Young birds, about 40-45 days old, will start singing to themselves.
– The best sound will be those sound that are generated by the colony King leader.

11. Important of good External sounds
– How do you determined a good external sounds.
– Good external sounds are those that not only bring those birds to your BH rooftop but also pull them into the house.
– It is better to bring 10 birds and all entered the BH entrance hole than to bring 1000 birds but not a single bird entered.
– It also can last a longer period of time.
– It makes those birds cling to your tweeters inside or outside the BH.
– It will populate your BH with immediate effect.

12. Function of your External sounds
– In the world of swiftlet farming, good external sound is like those advertising board you place on your newly opened hotel.
– It is like announcing that a new BH hotel has open and you welcome those birds to come in and inspect.
– If your BH is in perfect condition those birds will decited to stay overnight.
– However if you BH is bad those birds will say goodbye and will never come back.
– So you need to be very careful before playing those good sounds.

13. Function of your Internal sounds
– We use internal sound to cheat those new birds into thinking that our new BH is full of birds.
– We actually make them feel very peaceful and make them believed that the house is full of babies and others birds about to mate.
– If there are many babies and other birds calling to mate than this is safe for me?
– Remember the house is pitch dark and those birds do not know that those sounds are coming from your amplifiers.
– They never go to school like us. They do not know that there is such thing as amplifiers, tweeters and electricity.
– Some sounds makes those birds wanting to find a partner for mating purposess.
– Once a young bird can fly they will need least 6-8 months to be sexually matured.
– If you play the right sound they will be able to accelerate their sexually readiness.
– A good internal sound will encourage those birds to stay put after your BH external spund stop.

14. How long will my External sounds last?
– There is fast rule but once the sound are dead with not a single bird responding you might as well change them.
– Some last for one year, some 6 months, some three some only a few weeks.
– When you keep playing the same some for 13 solid hours a day, they will decreassed in their effectiveness.
– You need to have a proper planning on how to keep getting those birds on your rooftop.
– The best is to have a collection of all those good sounds in your library.
– Start with about 5 sounds and slowly move up to 20-30 sounds.

15. How to choose a good sound for your new BH?
– My special method is to get a person with a library of good sounds to come over tou your BH.
– Ask him to bring his computer with all the best sounds.
– Pay him a small fee and let him test all his best sounds one by one.
– You and your partner will do the checking of how many birds responded and how many entered.
– Choose the right time, say early in the morning at 7:00am till 10:00am.
– Or later in the evening like at 5:00pm till 7:00pm.
– Once you have identified those effective sounds, buy it from him, label them and keep them in a safe place.
