Swiftlet farming (part 5)

Author: Pak Harry

  1. Swiftlet farming: number 1&2 of your BH
    1. Introduction:

    – Most BH owners have very clue about how to have a set of objective when operating their BH.
    – They operated their BH with no directions and no target to achieve.
    – I on have this idea that every BH owner have to run their BHs in phases.
    – Their first phase is to push their birds population to at least 300 couples.
    – Once this is achieved they can move to the second phase.
    – The two phase techniques will make you more focus on where those young birds are coming from.
    – Phase 1 is when your BH is new and empty. Your future will be totaly dependent on those young birds originated from your neighbors BHs or the surrounding Caves (if there are any).
    – Phase 2 is when your BH is with about 300 nests. You are now generating your own young birds.

2. Why your need to two phases?
– Most people have this wrong perception that running BH is totally dependent more on luck.
– Build at any place and use any design, open a hole and play some sound those birds will come in.
– This sound not be in your brain. Those were the early days swiftlet farming and not applicable any longer.
– You can’t depend or luck but knowledge and proper planning is the key to success.
– During the first phase of your BH operation you have nothing inside and your main hope is to lure those wild swiftlet from your neighbors BHs or from those natural caves.
– Once your BH nests population reaches a reasinable number, you need to work hard on how to make those young birds to stay in and not to abort to your neighbor’s BHs.

3. Phase number 1
– Phase no 1 will the toughest and most chellanging.
– Your mission is to harvest a total of 300 couples to fill up your new BH.
– This is where you knowledge about swiftlet will help you to lure them to enter your BH and turn themselves up as a permanent tenant.
– Once they erect their nest and lay their first egg they will be yours until they die.
– With a lifespan of about 10-12 years you might have at least three nests a year from each couple.
– This will be equivalent to 30-36 nests per couple.
– The best is that they produce their young and if you are smart you will get these babies to populate your BH.
– Your BH with 300 couples will not become a young baby generator.

4. How to get 300 couples?
– Assuming you have a well located BH and design too.
– What else should you do to get them to be your permanent tenant?
– All that you need to do is to install everything that they likes and remove those that they dislikes.
– My recommendation is provide them with the following:

  • Adequate external sound playing tweeters.
  • Play the best external sounds.
  • Lots of internal sound playing tweeters.
  • 900 corners.
  • Lots of fake nests.
  • Proper internal sound.
  • Spray Super Pheromone on all your fake nests.
  • VIP rooms.
  • Spray Mutiara Aroma on the walls and floors.
  • Waste wood corners.
  1. What else?
    – You have to put aside the nest quality but get the numbers up to 300 couples.

6. Most important give what they like
– Try to list all those things that they love to build their nest on.
– If they love those 900corners, let them have them.
– If they like to use those fake nests, let them have.
– If they like those aroma, fill then house with these aromas.
– If they love those VIP rooms create a few on every floor.
– If they don’t like human to enter the BH too often, you try to stay away from it.
– If they don’t like those geckos, cockroaches and etc, remove them.

7. Your ultimate objective in phase!
– Your ultimate aim during Phase 1 is to get about 300 couples within the shortest posssible period.
– During the said period you concentrate on those wild birds from sky and not from your own nests.
– Lure them in and make sure they will become your tenant.
– All that you need is to encourage them to lay just one egg.
– The moment they laid they will be your permanent tenant until they die (usually).

8. Move to phase 2!
– Once you have about 300 nests inside you can start to move to the second phase or Phase 2.
– Now you have a total of 300 nests which can produce a total of 600 young birds every breeding cycle.
– One year you will be able to have at least 1800 young birds generated by your own BH.
– Can you think of any ways to get all of them to stay put and not moving out to your neighbors BHs?

9. What you should know?
– Phase 2 is more exciting as compared to Phase 1.
– This is because you now have about 1800 young birds generated inside.
– With a huge amount of young birds babies generated there is no need to depend on your neighbors.
– All you need to think about is how to get your young one to return home after they flew for the first time.
– Ask yourself what can you do to pull them back once they take their first flight?
– What are the various proven methods to keep them staying in your BH?

10. abc
– Start a plan to get your nests population to be increasing by at least 100% within 12 months.
– List all the possible methods and try to work on them in stages.
– There are various methods that you can start applying.
– The best will be as given in the next few slides.

11. Your first step
– Make sure all you old tenant return home after every harvest you made.
– You can easily get this done by applying Super Pheromone onto the base of the harvested nests markings.
– The smell of this liquid will get those old birds to reactivate their nest building cycle on an immediate basis.
– Usually with three to four weeks they will rebuilt their nests lay two eggs and incubate them.

12. Your second step
– Have you ever talk to any BH owners whose house were being burglarized?
– If your answer is yes you will discover that after three months of the burglary the nests numbers will increase by about 25-30%.
– If this is true you should list as a routine force harvest one every 12 months.
– During force harvest the whole colony feel threatened and call for reinforcement.

13. Your third step
– One every common problems that most BH will face is a sudden brake in nests increment.
– You need to monitor the nests numbers on a regular basis and if their numbers remained stagnant you have to do something quick.
– Those young babies refuse to return home after took their first flight out of your BH.
– You need to quickly identify what is wrong yourself or get some experience “sifu” to trace the possinle problems.

14. Your fourth step
– Once proven technique used by Ketua Pengarah Pehilitan of Sabah is “translocation”.
– What he did was to introduce matured young birds into his BH.
– After releasing them inside his BH about 15-20% return to the house.
– You might want to consider this idea by getting those swiftlet eggs, incubate them, breed those young birds and release inside your BH.
– If you regularly release say 100 birds per month you might have about 20% of 2400 birds or 480 birds.

15. Your fifth step
– Once the baby birds reaches 43 days old they will no longer wanter to eat.
– They will be flapping their wings and get their body weight down.
– On the 45 day morning they will fly out of your BH using those morning light to guide them out.
– All you need to do is to breed the young chicks and release them, on their 43rdday, inside a special made room with a window ready for them to fly out.
– They will usually return home if they are not eaten by predators or not lost they way.

16. Your sixth step
– It’s a fact that if you have more female birds the chance of them returning home is higher as compared to having male young birds.
– If this theory applies to human being it also apply to swiftlet.
– All you need to do is to make choose female eggs to be inserted inside all those 300 nests on a regular basis.
– If will be nice if all the 1800 young nests produced are all female birds.
– They will get their male partner from your neighbors and return home to breed.

  1. Your seventh step
    – Use incubation method as compared to eggs insertion.
    – The success rate is much higher.
    – You can buy those eggs from BH owners who regular conduct force harvest and select those female eggs to be incubated.
    – Once selected you can place these babies into those nests with newly hatched babies.
    – Make sure their parent are not at home.
    – If they reject you need to place all the three babies that are hatches from your incubator.
